Safa Sidheeq is a postgraduate student specializing in English Language Teaching and a passionate language learner. She holds a BA in English from the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad.
Safa speaks English, Malayalam, and Hindi fluently and has proficiency
in Arabic and French. With a strong foundation in language education, she is enthusiastic about using innovative teaching methods to empower learners and contribute meaningfully to their educational journeys. Her volunteer work at literature festivals reflects her enthusiasm for
creativity and cultural engagement.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to enhance students’ language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, enabling them to confidently engage with longer, more complex materials and tasks. The curriculum follows the Common Language Framework, providing a structured approach to language learning.
ASSESSMENT & GRADING SYSTEM
Throughout the course, there will be regular formative assessments that align with the language and skills covered. These assessments will provide ongoing feedback to students, helping them track their progress and identify areas for improvement. At the end of the course, there will be a summative test that covers all aspects of the curriculum.
The assessments will cover the following areas:
- Listening: ability to understand straightforward questions and core information, ability to follow conversations when the speaker speaks slowly and clearly, and readiness to ask for repetition when needed.
- Reading: ability to comprehend the content of accessible texts, such as labels, posters, catalogues, ads, menus, job offers, and schedules, as well as ability to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from context.
- Speaking: ability to answer questions about oneself, and to discuss topics such as family, place of residence, and food using simple sentences.
- Writing: ability to write a short message.
Grades will be determined based on student performance in these areas, with a focus on assessing the application of language skills in practical contexts.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The program consists of two days of language classes per week and one biweekly cultural program. To receive a certificate, students must meet the attendance criteria. Students who have missed more than four classes or more than two cultural programs will not be eligible for the certificate.

CERTIFICATION
A certificate is issued upon completion of the course requirements, which include attending at least 90% of the contact hours and passing the final exam. The certificate indicates the course title, volume or number of academic hours, and the time of the course.

Jamil Ahmed, hailing from Kolkata, is a Postgraduate English teacher with seven years of experience. Currently working as an English Language trainer abroad, he passionately embraces S.T. Coleridge’s belief that “Language is the armoury of the human mind, and at once contains the trophies of the past and the weapons of its future conquests.”
Fascinated by the connection between language and culture, Jamil has delved into English, Persian, French, Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu. His leisure revolves around reading and writing, his favorite form of sport being verbal jugglery. He operates his poetry Blog (www.wordsillumine.home.blog) with over 200 poems. His aspiration is to publish his thoughts and ideas in a book, reaching a wider audience. Jamil joined Umran in the Summer of 2021.

Nahid Aslam is a social subjects teacher by profession. She is of Punjabi origin, born and brought up in Scotland. Her interests include Race and Class, environmentalism and social justice. She spent a few months in her younger days volunteering at the Guru Nanak Home for Handicapped Children in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
She believes it’s important for people from different cultures and communities to come together in mutual self-respect to learn from each other, thus helping to create harmony within society and the world.
