COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to enhance students’ language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, enabling them to confidently engage with longer, more complex materials and tasks. The curriculum follows the Common Language Framework, providing a structured approach to language learning.
ASSESSMENT & GRADING SYSTEM
Throughout the course, there will be regular formative assessments that align with the language and skills covered. These assessments will provide ongoing feedback to students, helping them track their progress and identify areas for improvement. At the end of the course, there will be a summative test that covers all aspects of the curriculum.
The assessments will cover the following areas:
- Listening: ability to understand straightforward questions and core information, ability to follow conversations when the speaker speaks slowly and clearly, and readiness to ask for repetition when needed.
- Reading: ability to comprehend the content of accessible texts, such as labels, posters, catalogues, ads, menus, job offers, and schedules, as well as ability to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from context.
- Speaking: ability to answer questions about oneself, and to discuss topics such as family, place of residence, and food using simple sentences.
- Writing: ability to write a short message.
Grades will be determined based on student performance in these areas, with a focus on assessing the application of language skills in practical contexts.

S Meryem
Instructor, USA
I am an English teacher and graduate student living in Istanbul, Turkey. I completed my BA in linguistics, Middle Eastern Studies and French at Rutgers University in New Jersey (USA), and am currently studying an MA in civilization studies at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul. I also hold a CELTA (Cambridge English Certification) and have taught English to second-language learners in various capacities since 2013. Although my family resides in the US and my roots are originally planted in northern Europe, I have lived varying periods of time in France, Morocco, and now Turkey as well.
I am so passionate about the Umran program. It gives students (and teachers as well!) the opportunity to discover the world through new languages while helping them reaffirm their own unique and necessary place within the global civilization. Through their language-learning students hone their skills, broaden their horizons, and strengthen a sense of who they are, where they come from and who they are becoming.
Jamil Ahmed
Instructor, India
Jamil Ahmed hails from Kolkata , the city of joy. He is a Postgraduate English teacher having seven years of teaching experience, presently working as an English Language trainer overseas. He ardently believes what one of the greatest British Romantic poet, S.T.coleridge said, “Language is the armoury of the human mind, and at once contains the trophies of the past and the weapons of its future conquests.”
His belief that language is the very gateway to one’s culture and the quest to know about different cultures through their literature helped him learn and work in various languages such as English, Persian, French, Bengali, Hindi and Urdu. His favourite sport is verbal jugglery and thus he spends his leisure time reading and writing. He runs his own poetry Blog (www.wordsillumine.home.blog) where he has more than 200 poems to his name. He wishes to bring them in a book form so that his thoughts and ideas may reach across a larger pool of people. He has been associated with Umran since the Summer of 2021.
