Avik Das

Instructor

I am Avik Das, a language enthusiast, polyglot and a passionate Spanish teacher based in New Delhi. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Spanish language and literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University. I did my bachelor’s in Spanish earlier from the same university. Before that, I also did another bachelor’s degree majoring in English literature. I am fluent in four languages which are Bengali, Hindi, English and Spanish. I have also acquired basic knowledge of Portuguese.

In 2018, I qualified the interview of Process Executive at Cognizant for the Spanish process in Kolkata and for two years I have worked as a freelance data annotator and moderator for the English and Spanish language in a process of Microsoft but my urge for teaching and imparting quality education and content in Spanish was boundless therefore I have created a page named The Spanish and English Language Academy which presently has over 6000 followers where I publish many insightful posts related to learning Spanish.

Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course aims to enhance students’ language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, enabling them to confidently engage with longer, more complex materials and tasks. The curriculum follows the Common Language Framework, providing a structured approach to language learning.

ASSESSMENT & GRADING SYSTEM

Throughout the course, there will be regular formative assessments that align with the language and skills covered. These assessments will provide ongoing feedback to students, helping them track their progress and identify areas for improvement. At the end of the course, there will be a summative test that covers all aspects of the curriculum.

The assessments will cover the following areas:

  • Listening: ability to understand straightforward questions and core information, ability to follow conversations when the speaker speaks slowly and clearly, and readiness to ask for repetition when needed.
  • Reading: ability to comprehend the content of accessible texts, such as labels, posters, catalogues, ads, menus, job offers, and schedules, as well as ability to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from context.
  • Speaking: ability to answer questions about oneself, and to discuss topics such as family, place of residence, and food using simple sentences.
  • Writing: ability to write a short message.

Grades will be determined based on student performance in these areas, with a focus on assessing the application of language skills in practical contexts.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The program consists of two days of language classes per week and one biweekly cultural program. To receive a certificate, students must meet the attendance criteria. Students who have missed more than four classes or more than two cultural programs will not be eligible for the certificate.
